Ely Cathedral

This statue of the Virgin Mary has caused some controversy, she is a full figured Mary, upward looking rather than the usual o so humble downward looking Mary we see.

This cathedral has been the most breathtaking place I've been/ seen thus far. I don't even know where to begin, there was so much history and fascinating information to take in, I could have spent hours and hours there. The cathedral was founded as a monastery in 673, and was largely destroyed during King Henry VIII's reign, after the split with the pope and catholic church. (For those of you who've seen The Other Boleyn Girl, you know the cause of this, partly a woman!)

In 1932 this octagon collapsed, but was rebuilt, using wood instead of stone.
